Enterprise IT infrastructure design.

When IT grows, the infrastructure must designed, not improvised. Server room sized for 5 years, scalable networking, centralized storage, distributed redundancy, perimeter security, adequate UPS and cooling. Every detail counts: a well-built server room makes the difference between 99.9% and 99.99% uptime.

Server room professionale

  • Electrical sizing: load, reserve, N+1/2N redundancy
  • UPS double-conversion online with ≥ 15 min runtime + generator if necessary
  • Dedicated cooling: split or in-row, humidity control, hot-aisle/cold-aisle
  • Physical security: badge access, biometrics, video surveillance, intrusion detection
  • Smoke detection: Aspirating VESDA + aerosol/NOVEC 1230 suppression
  • Sensors: temperature, humidity, flooding connected to the BMS
  • Structured cablingCat 6A/7A copper + OM4/OS2 fiber, tidy patch panels, labels
03 / Networking enterprise

Networking enterprise

  • Core / Distribution / Access: 2-3 tier hierarchy with redundant switches
  • Perimeter firewalls: Palo Alto, Fortinet, Sophos, Check Point with HA cluster
  • SD-WAN: multi-site management with automatic internet failover
  • Wi-Fi business 6/6E/7: centralized controller, multiple SSIDs, captive portal
  • VLAN segmentation: separation of management, server, client, IoT, guest
  • Zero Trust microsegmentation with identity-based firewall
04 / Storage and backup

Storage and backup

  • SAN Fibre Channel / iSCSI: NetApp, Pure Storage, Dell PowerStore, HPE Primera
  • NAS: Synology, QNAP per condivisione file, or soluzioni enterprise
  • Hyperconvergence (HCI): Nutanix, VxRail, Azure Stack HCI
  • Centralized backup: Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik with retention policy
  • ImmutabilityWORM copies on object storage or LTO tape
  • DR site: geographic replication with certified RPO/RTO
05 / FAQ

Most frequent technical questions about infrastructure.

Server room sized for the next 5 years: how to do it?+
Capacity planning calculated across 3 dimensions: space (rack U), electrical (kW per rack), thermal (BTU/h). Typical SMB growth: +20-30% per year. Size with a 50% margin. Minimum N+1 redundancy for electrical and cooling.
Online double-conversion UPS: which one to size for a server cluster?+
Calculation: sum of the servers' nominal load + 30% margin. E.g. 3 servers at 800W each + 30% = ~3.1 kVA UPS. Typical runtime 10-15 min (just enough for a controlled shutdown or generator startup). Brands: APC, Eaton, Riello UPS, Vertiv.
Enterprise firewall for SMBs: which brands do you recommend?+
For different tiers: Fortinet FortiGate 80F-100F (SMBs of 20-100 users), Palo Alto PA-440 (top-tier security), Sophos XGS (management simplicity), Stormshield (made in EU, NIS2-friendly compliance), Check Point Quantum (complex multi-site).
HCI hyperconvergence (Nutanix, VxRail, Azure Stack HCI): when does it make sense?+
When you want to simplify the refresh of a small cluster (3-6 nodes). Pros: rapid deployment, linear scaling, unified management. Cons: vendor lock-in, license costs higher than traditional, storage scalability tied to compute.
Centralized cross-site backup: which architecture?+
3-2-1-1-0: 3 copies, 2 different media, 1 off-site, 1 immutable (Hardened Repository or WORM object storage), 0 errors at test. Typical tools: Veeam B&R + Wasabi/Backblaze B2/Azure Blob immutable, Commvault, Rubrik, Cohesity.
